The Embedded Systems Engineer will bridge the gap between software and hardware, involving the design of analog and digital circuits, schematic capture, and component selection.  The position must be innovative and detail-oriented. The position will play a key role in enhancing product functionality and ensuring high-quality performance.

Essential Functions:

System Design & Documentation
• Lead the design, development, and testing of embedded systems, from initial concept through production.
• Create comprehensive project documentation, including system architecture, block diagrams, firmware state diagrams, and product descriptions in accordance with ISO standards and company policies.
• Perform feasibility studies, design and construct specialized test jigs/fixtures, and interface with suppliers as needed.

Hardware Design & Development
• Design and develop high-speed mixed-signal (analog and digital) circuits, including:
o Microprocessors, DSPs, FPGAs, memory, and clocking circuits.
o Communication interfaces such as Ethernet, UART, USB, I2S, I2C, and SPI.
o Analog and digital audio systems.
o Low-voltage switch-mode power supplies (SMPS).
• Perform circuit simulation using LTSpice or equivalent tools.
• Create complete schematic packages, including BOMs, layout instructions, and all necessary manufacturing files for PCBs and PCBAs.
• Apply best practices for high-speed PCB layout, design for EMC (EN55032, EN61000), design for safety (EN62368), and design for reliability (thermal management).

Firmware & Software Development
• Develop, test, and debug robust, real-time embedded firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers and DSPs.
• Write low-level drivers and APIs for peripherals and communication protocols.
• Implement and optimize firmware to ensure seamless hardware/software integration and meet system performance requirements.
• Utilize version control systems (e.g., Git) for firmware development.

Integration, Testing & Validation
• Perform hands-on board bring-up and debug new hardware prototypes, identifying and resolving issues at the hardware-software interface.
• Assemble and modify electrical prototypes and systems using hand tools and measuring instruments to correct functional deviations.
• Set up and operate test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.) to evaluate system performance and validate designs against specifications.
• Verify second-source component compatibility through comprehensive testing.
• Document test procedures, specifications, and results.

Collaboration & Support
• Participate in hardware and firmware design reviews to ensure project goals, timelines, and budgets are met.
• Collaborate with mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineers to bring new products from concept to production.
• Provide technical assistance and problem resolution for engineering challenges encountered throughout the product lifecycle.
• Train technicians on technical aspects of new designs and products.


Essential Tasks:

  • Provide support for customer problems/complaints.   This could be in-house, telephone, on site, etc.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers and other personnel to identify, define, and solve development problems.
  • Analyze and interpret test information to resolve design-related problems.
  • Prepare project cost and work-time estimates.
  • Draw or modify diagrams and write engineering specifications to clarify design details and functional criteria of experimental            electronics units.
  • Review the work of others within the team and coach as necessary. 
  • Review existing electrical engineering criteria to identify necessary revisions, deletions, or amendments to outdated material.
  • Plan method and sequence of operations for developing and testing experimental electronic and electrical equipment.
  • Proficiency in the use of electronic test equipment, comprehensive understanding of electronic circuitry theory.
  • Comprehensive understanding of mechanical PCB design for audio and power circuitry.
  • Interface with internal and/or contract manufacturers to resolve any production or test issues.

Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Higher in Electrical Engineering.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Proficiency with oscilloscopes, meters, and other basic lab equipment.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools (Altium).
  • Knowledge of embedded systems, hardware, and firmware.
  • Knowledge of DSP algorithms and programming methods.
  • Knowledge of audio concepts, circuits, embedded systems, PLD programming – all a plus.
  • Programming in assembly, C, and C++ on a limited basis, such as for new design testing.
  • Ability to travel within the US or internationally.
  • One year ISO 9001 or QS 9000 work environment a plus.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded software development, preferably in the audio industry or related field.
  • Proven experience with board bring-up, hardware validation, and driver support for custom embedded systems.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaboration tools for embedded development.
  • Experience with test and debug tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers for hardware-software integration.
  • Experience working in an agile development environment and participating in code reviews, testing, and product iteration.
